Why does braiding your hair help grow it?

im tired of my hair not growing, i finaly trimmed about 2" off and recently purchaced biotin, hair,skin%26amp;nails. also i am conditioning it when i braid it . is their anything else I can do to help it grow??? please help.. i have natural curly hair, that I love but it only seemed to grow to a certain length then break, so i trimmed it, and I am hoping to get a healthy head of hair that is long...it took me years to finaly do this..hope this works.any sugestions i would love...
